Gandhi Smruti & Darshan Samiti

The concepts of Constructive work proposed by Gandhiji are as relevant today as these were when he had proposed these in the early years of 20th century. The 150 years of Gandhiji’s Birth Anniversary are going to be celebrated during Oct. 2018 – Oct. 2019.

While there are several initiatives from the private charities as well as innovative programs from the Central or State governments, these are very few from the perspective of the magnitude of the challenges facing the country as well as humanity at large. This is particularly important in today’s context where the socio-political leadership has largely promoted the spirit of dependence on the government/non-governmental organizations than community participation. Moreover, a majority of development initiatives are motivated by personal or sectarian interests.

It is hoped that recognition of grass-root initiatives of community involvement by individuals and organizations, which promote the spirit of self-righteousness and self-reliance, will help in motivating larger number of youth for socially relevant initiatives in different walks of life.

To commemorate the150th Anniversary of Gandhiji, Mission Samriddhi has proposed to get an assessment of the initiatives and status of constructive work undertaken by individuals and institutions in post independent India  as well as in the Asian subcontinent, particularly in the current context of the past 4-5 decades.

It also proposes to identify contemporary Gandhians within the country from different walks of life in the spirit of Constructive Work proposed by Gandhiji, document their contributions and honour them on this occasion so that the younger generation can look towards such persons as their Ideals and Mentors. Such persons can also be involved in guiding specific constructive work initiatives.

Mission Samriddhi is proposing five (5) Fellowships of 3 year duration to be instituted in collaboration with Gandhi Smruti and DarshanSamiti (GSDS), Delhi to undertake such studies in the following areas:

1. Panchayat Empowerment

2. Artisans and Rural Innovations

3. Rural Entrepreneurship and Marketing

4. Empowering the Underprivileged (People as well as Areas)

5. Non-violence and Conflict Resolution

Efforts will be made to prepare Status Reports in all the above areas with the help of these competent and committed Gandhi Darshanand Action Fellows. In the process a list of institutions and individuals involved with such initiatives will also be prepared who shall be honoured every year (2017, 2018 and 2019) on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The felicitation function for such Fellows will be accompanied with presentation of their work and sharing of their experiences.

An extensive brainstorming will be undertaken at a convention in September/October 2019 to review all these initiatives and learn from their experiences so that youth could be motivated to initiate more of these.

In summary, Mission Samriddhi’s objectives of the GSDS Fellowships are :

  • To identify contemporary initiatives by individuals/institutions (including/outside the governmental programs) which promote the Gandhian concepts of Constructive Work to inculcate the spirit of self-reliance and Gram-Swarajya through community participation.
  • To honour 100 such individuals every year on the 2nd October (2017 & 2018) and all of them on the 150th anniversary of Gandhiji on the 2nd October 2019 so that the youth could be motivated towards such ideals and initiatives.
  • To prepare a Broad Status Report of such initiatives from across the country and the subcontinent and develop meaningful programs of Sustainable and Holistic Development with community participation.
